Problem

Fast fashion contributes to 10% of the global carbon production and 20% of water pollution. People lack the education needed to make informed purchases when looking for clothes.

Approach

Our goal was to decrease consumer spending, increase consumer awareness of fast fashion, and offer a sustainable solution that makes shoppers feel good about their purchases.

What are the pain points of consumers who want to shop sustainably?

1.

Habitual Shopping

Cheap clothing and changing trends results in the toxic cycle of purchasing.

2.

Lack of Education

Consumers are aware of the fast fashion epidemic, but are unaware of how they can make better choices.

Why is fast fashion not cool?

Water Pollution

Dying, bleaching, and processing results in 20% of overall water pollution in the world.

Waste

Clothing unsold in thrift shops often end up in landfills in the global south.

Labor

Garment workers in America are not paid the legal minimum wage.

What can consumers do to reduce the negative impact of fast fashion?

A truly sustainable brand will be completely transparent with their process, and source materials and hire employees ethically.

Shop Sustainable Brands

Buy Thrift

Buying thrift keeps clothing from ending up in landfills.

Repurposing old clothing can slow down purchasing and lead to consumers thinking out side of the box.

Upcycle Old Clothing

How might we both educate our audience while also providing an incentivized resource that empowers them to take action?

Solution: Canditch

What is Canditch?

We want sustainable fashion to be as easy as a google search. Canditch will allow consumers to have access to educational resources while also providing tools to use on their next in-store or online shopping experience. Through the usage of neural networks our browser extension and mobile app can scan outfits or webpages to find the sustainable version of whatever style you are looking for. By offering both thrifted options and brands vetted by good on you, we allow consumers to find their size and style while saving the planet. To educate new users, we have an interactive web experience that walks consumers through the realities of fashion and how they can be a part of the change.

What I learned…

I learned a lot about the importance of communication while working with a team. We had to update each other constantly to make sure we were on schedule or if we were behind. I also learned that three brains is better than one when bringing a multi-interfaced idea to life.

With more time, I would love to give the interactive educational quiz another go around. With my skills growing, I am positive now I can create a truly interactive experience for the user.

With more time…
